Thanks again
Thanks for everyone for the helpful replies, in the end, I am certain that my car is an original convertible, not a replica:

The original VIN Number which is given on the first DVLA registration certificate corresponds to Touring or Convertible, not saloon. If anyone was going to massage the switch, they wouldn't have given saloon as the type as long ago as 1967.
The same VIN number & registration remain on all the DVLA change of ownership documents provided after a V888 request so noone has switched plates along the lines.
The engineer's report at valuation describes it as an original , a point he was asked to be very specific over.
My local garage Chris Bransby ( formerly Tom Roy) is only 3 miles away and didn't have any doubts

Conclusion DVLA/original garage have mis classified it.
Now just to get back to enjoying driving it.

would the same be applicable if my car has an age related plate?

Don't see why not, for only £5.oo what is there to risk? After all, its the vehicle history they record, so if there have been any changes along the way in registration number, owner, type, hopefully, they should all show up. I was led into the request via the excellent article in the last magazine which listed ''survivors'' by year and type.
good luck
