Spare Wheel

Post by Ondergard »

The boot of my Minor, like all others I guess, has a plywood two piece floor which rests on a built-in rack. Presumably, the space underneath created by this creation is for the spare wheel... so has anyone got any ideas as to why my spare wheel doesn't fit in to that space under the plywood?

I've tried sliding the spare under the ply, but the boot lock catch gets in the way! I've tried taking the ply out, and plaing the wheel in that way, but the centre strut of the rack won't allow it!

Am I going mad, or does anyone else have a spare wheel which doesn't fit in the space which is supposedly designed for it?

If you have 115 tyres it is a squeeze but will fit any larger and you won't get it in there.

i know it sounds dreadful, but the back bar of the boot floor does bend after a while. my method of getting the spare in (with 155 tyres on i hasten to add) was to get a crow or jemmy bar, and gently pry the the rear of the boot floor up. it may damage the paint slightly, so if you intend on entering concourse with your car perhaps give it a miss. my spare wheel now just amount fits in there with a bit of room to breathe.

i manage to squeeze a 165 under there, just remember its ten times harder to get out than it is to get in. I got a puncture the other week and managed to retrieve it and fit it without to much hassle.
you must be running something pretty fat to not be able to squeeze it in.

Good idea, and that's what I did, using two jacks (a trolley jack under the car, and the car's own jack in the boot, lined up with each other, and covered by two blocks of wood to avoid damaging or bending bodywork.

The spare's now in the spare compartment!

when I had fatter tyres(Got standard ones now) the only way to fit the spare was to deflate it and carry a tyre pump,no great hassle since in the 15 years I had the fatter tyres never had a flat .Shouldn't of said that dohh.

Enough room for 155 tyres and a spare set of gaskets, not enough room for 175 tyres

Take the wooden boards out, enjoy the extra boot space, and lodge your spare wheel under the bonnet on the bonnet stiffening crossbar!
