New Purchase with Old Style Log Book

Post by BigDawgV8 »

Hi All,

I have just bought another Mog ( :D ) and this one came with the old-type log-book.
The last change of owner was in 1992 and the log-book hasn't been up-dated since then.

If I remember correctly wasn't there some sort of ''amnesty'' for owners to have their old log-books changed to the new type??
What happens now if mine hasn't been up-dated? Is there a fee?
There is no 'Historic Vehicle' shown either so I will have to sort that also...........

Thanks for all the advice.

Cheers

Martin

Well the previous owner should have updated the log book in 2004 but the fact that they didn't shouldn't mean that you are liable for a fee. Providing the previous owner returns the relevant part of the log book to the DVLA in order to inform them that he has sold the vehicle (which he has a legal obligation to do in any event) as the new registered keeper you will be automatically issued with a new style log book.

By the way, from today a new style (red) V5C is in use:

What have you bought? Show us some pics :D

A car I bought last year had an old style one. I just sent it off with the new keeper details as usual with no problems
I did need to tax it before I received the new logbook & had to go to the main dvla office for this as the post office couldn't do it with the old type temporary section , something to do with a barcode & computer said no

Don't let go of the original log book or you will lose it, send a photocopy or if poss. go into your local DVLA and show the book.
If you can get an MOT then all the documentation can be sent off for change of owner and taxation class.
I managed to convince them that I was the new owner despite the person I bought the car from not registering it in his name, it had been sat in his back garden for three months.

there are quite a few cases of old V5s being totally lost in the system as they can't process them as easily.
Keep a colour scan (or the original), or better still - the advice to go to DVLA Local Office is best (if you have a local office)

Hi All
New style Log book arrived today - very snazzy!

I now need more advice.........

1) How do I go about taxing it as a Historic vehicle?
2) Can anyone supply a link to the DVLA SORN notification page? I think Roy posted it before.

Thanks

Martin

Do all of your vehicles have to be yellow Martin? :D

Here's link explaining how to SORN a vehicle:

And here's a link explaining how to tax it as an historic vehicle:

Isn't it strange how terminology changes with generations. "Old style log book" to me meant the folded green card that used to have every previous keeper on it, pr DVLA computerisation. :o

Thanks for the links!

DVLA web-site tells me I'm too early to apply for SORN (new log-book)

No but it helps! :D

In fact I have 1 1/2 yellow cars and 2 1/2 blue ones and there's only one of me!

(BTW - are you going to Enfield on sunday?)
