Traveller re-wiring problem

I have just re-wired my daughters 1965 traveller. The original car had a dynamo, but this was converted to an alternator about a year ago by Charles Ware in Bristol. The replacement wiring loom was bought from MOSS with the following details, MML512, HARNESS, complete PVC cables in a braided harness, 1965-70 with key start & alternator, Van/Pick-Up from (c) 177160 Traveller from (c) 1082537. After the re-wiring the car started OK but the lights did not work. After some investigation I found two brown wires with spade connectors on them coming out of the main loom, near the fuse unit. When i shorted these wire together the lights worked.

Q1. Should these spade connectors fit somewhere, or should I just connect them together. The haynes manual I have does not show these wires as the wiring diagram are for early and late dynamo models only.

The other problem I found was a spare wire near the solenoid unit. The wire is infact two brown wires terminated together with a large ring terminal, large enough to fit one of the solenoid unit screw terminals. The connections to the solenoid I made are the same as the original loom and the car starts OK.

Q2. Does anyone know what this ring connector is for and where does it go?

Any information that will help me with my two questions/problems, I will be very grateful for as my daughter is itching to get her moggie called Aggie back on the road.

I just been reading some of the other electrical posts and the answer to Q2 for the ring terminal could be the solenoid unit +ve terminal, as they may come from the Altenator? Will need to con them out first, or I could be barking up the wrong tree?

Hello Russ,

brown wires are battery direct connections, so connect to battery fed terminals such as the solenoid battery side terminal, alternator and non ignition switch fed fuse that supplies the interior lights and horn.

Did your alternator conversion use the control box or was the control box removed?

As others have said - brown is +ve bus, so join them all together!

In answer to Mike's question, the alternator conversion was done without the control box.

Since you have fitted a complete new harness - it matters not anyway.
