Hi
Just found a small dripping leak on the bottom of my 1971 Traveller petrol tank after filling it up. When you touch where the petrol drip is, the metal feels soft and I guess rusted. The rest of the tank is sound with no rust in evidence from the outside. could anyone advise if I should I seal it or get a new tank?
thank you
Paul

You can buy stuff called 'Petro patch' for repairing petrol tanks, you could try that, it obviously all depends how big an area has rusted through. You'll have to drain the tank to use the petro patch.

Patch it - for a temporary solution until the NEW tank arrives. You know it makes sense..........

Hi
Ive used petro patch on a damaged tank and it is excellent stuff also if its not leaking badly its tolerant of a small amount of petrol leakage but probably best to drain it as above. As BMC advise you should really look at replacing the tank unless your sure its just a one off rust hole perhaps where the paint was chipped off.
Tanks often rot from the inside out in which case its an accident waiting to happen
There are internal tank coatings but in my experience theyre more trouble than theyre worth.

thanks for this advice.
Have got a petro patch for now and will then look to replace the tank.

Replace the tank don't waste money and time trying to patch (My honest opinion) it it false and unsafe economy.
