1275 midget engine.

Hi, I have just acquired a 1275 midget engine complete with all ancillaries and carbs for £170... Hooray.

Can I use this with the std Gearbox and stainless exhaust ? Not a boy racer I just needed a bit more power.

Yes! Power will be slightly stifled by the standard stainless exhaust - but it will work ok. Are you going to use the twin carbs ??

Thought i might use the twin carbs but also have an hif 44 i bought for the midget I own. Any thoughts? chris

HIF 44 is MUCH better! Use it. Likely it would foul the bonnet of the Midget anyway.

The HIF will be easier to set up but if you want the classic 60s look go for the twins. [frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

These small twins are barely able to make 75 bhp on a 1275 (the #1 mod on a Cooper S was to fit the larger 2 X 1.5" SUs for up to an extra 10 bhp) - the single HIF 44 (if Vizardised) is good for ~ 100 bhp.

You need to get the book! But he details various mods - from simple to extreme - such as knife edging the butterfly/modifying the piston front edge/slimming down the throttle spindle etc etc and gives air flow improvements for each mod. However - most only are important if going for max power from this carb - if you have a relatively standard engine - the standard 44 carb will give you all the air flow you need - it will not be the limiting factor.

75 bhp is still more than the 65 - 70bhp of the standard Midget and this is a straight dump of Midget running gear plus Wolseley brakes into a Traveller using parts available in 1968 when the Traveller was made. HIF carbs had not been invented then.

Oh yes - I realise that! Although the 1.75" SU was well know - I knew of a 1293 Road/Sprint Mini in the early 70s which controversially used one (not me!) with a 649 cam and went very well indeed.
