Post by lippychick »

ok i thought it was time to start here so here goes i have been and still am refurbishing my wheels and i do find it hard to get time on her as i have 3 kids but its slow however yesterday i did manage time out to strip her interior and the next step is to remove the engine and fuel tank.

ok first thing is the wheels before[frame]Image[/frame]

now during[frame]Image[/frame]

was hard work and gives you achey hands
now here are the before and after of the strip down[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame] [frame]Image[/frame]
sorry some of the pics are not great[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]my helper :0) he has all the knowledge[frame]Image[/frame]
and now we have this :0)[frame]Image[/frame]
as you can see she will be needing floors[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

I only see one hole and a repair done above the crossmember most of the rust looks superficial.
Nice job on the wheels and your handbrake needs adjusting :) .
Welcome.

Hi. I have a 1972 four door that I recently bought (and thinking of selling). Its in much worse condition that yours, think rusty swiss cheese, but as its an Irish 4 door car it may be worth seriously restoring by someone. So I'm very interested to hear of your progress and look forward to following it over time. (ps. I have temporally named my one 'Lazarus').

I think Tonks' floors look marvelous, compared to the floors in my car! Total replacement for mine, all four panels and some sill repairs. Wire-brush the rust down and see the condition from there...and take a good look at the floor from the underside.

And yes, we love pix! :D

Sometimes it is hard to spot the rot until you've pulled the car apart. Hasn't anyone else noticed the vertical heelboards being plated over on the rear crossmember, the new front 6 inches of the inner sill nearest the front arch, the front corner of the rear wheelarch where it joins the sill, the new bottom outer corner of the front wheelarch and the plates under the right heel of the front passenger. Not trying to look smart, but isn't it a worry how we can miss these things?

LC has the best plan in that he is assuming that the floor needs to go. Doing it now will save heartache later on and getting the miserable and messy bit done before the winter starts to break down your enthusiasm is a good plan.

Best of luck!

PS Keep posting pics :D

well my helper told me to get them refurbished professionally and i wasnt keen with the cost so i decided to take out my normal drill and stuck a wire brush thing on it ( as im not keen on angle grinders) and kept going till it looked clean and shiney it took a while though and my arms were killing i figured if it looked ok when done i have saved a few quid if not i would send them off a pay lots but i think they are ok and so im working my way round the car doing the wheels as and when i get time :0)

Looks like you've done a good job on that wheel! well done, just shows what can be achieved cheaply with a bit of hard work and a few materials.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

ok well the engine is still in as i was trying to remove the front grille first and the bolts would not undo i must say we managed to get the hockey sticks off without damage but the top chrome peice did not come off as easy and may not be able to be reused unless we can do something with it as it looks to good.

below are the chrome pieces before cleaning ( cleaning soon :0) they are on the table waiting now ) grille i will strip back tomorrow and then when its bare will prime it ready to paint
[frame]Image[/frame]

below is the front panel as you can see it has been damaged at some point and semi repaired although not very well as it has a crease in it this will be striped down tomorrow ready to be primed i found traces of peat brown paint on this so now im starting to wonder what colour she was originally v5 said beige then grey as she is now but for her yr beige wasnt an option i dont think :0/

[frame]Image[/frame]

now the worst part was finding out how bad the inner cowl was i dont think i can save it without a repair panel think if i strip it back it will fall apart :0(

[frame]Image[/frame]

hopefully weather and kids permitting will get the parts striped down and the engine taken out and possibly the fuel tank out too ready to be cleaned and primed and painted

well the weather has not been kind to us so we have been limited to what we can do we have done some work we cleaned down the grille [frame]Image[/frame]
[frame]Image[/frame]
the front panel has also been stripped down and has been bashed about and the worst of the crease is out along with the other dents and has had some filler its inside waiting to be primed if it ever stops raining long enough
[frame]Image[/frame]
[frame]Image[/frame]
also spent some time in between showers stripping down another wheel
[frame]Image[/frame]
[frame]Image[/frame]
and then it looked like this :0)
[frame]Image[/frame]
its not perfect but it was hard work these are all waiting to be primed now

It was nice to meet you both on Wednesday and your enthusiasm is quite catching, just one pointer I know you are just posing with the wheel otherwise you would be wearing eye protection to avoid the stray wire strands I am sure
Cheers

well unfortunately we had to stop all work on tonks due to kids, weather and lack of money but i have also ended up with a shell of a 1966 4dr which has had most of the welding work done so now the weather is starting to get better we will be getting the shell done and if i can find some doors that are in reasonable condition it will be quicker will start posting pics as soon as we get back to working on them :0)
