Morris Gearbox
I wonder if anyone can help me please. I managed to save a gearbox from a skip at our local tip and I would like to know what vehicle it came off. It has Morris on one side and the number 15114 on the other. It has a dipstick for the gearbox oil and it has the number U6 or U5 ? stamped on the dipstick itself. I would think it is quite old, as how many gearboxes have a dipstick to check the gear oil. Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou[frame]

Re: Morris Gearbox
Certainly not a Morris Minor 1000 box - but hopefully someone will know. Well done saving it from the dump!

Re: Morris Gearbox
I can remember checking the gearbox oil on my Dad's Morris 8 years ago but I can't remember if this is what the box looked like.....?

I was wondering if it was the Morris 8/ 8E / Minor sidevalve box - I can't remember either - but it did have a long stick!

Re: Morris Gearbox
The box is the same as the Series MM box but with a different tail shaft. It also lacks the cutout hole to clear the steering rack. Therefore I would suggest one of the Morris 8 cars.
Worth hanging on to if it is ok. It should be easy to swap the tail shafts. Check that it is 4 speed

Re: Morris Gearbox
My mate has a Morris 8 and it looks very much the same as that. If I get the time I'll take a look under his car, or get him to look at these pics

Re: Morris Gearbox
If it came out of a skip then it is probably knackered but still a valuable source of spare parts. I can suggest one or two people who may appreciate it for rebuilds.

Re: Morris Gearbox
I believe these boxes were considered to be better than the early Minor (Austin A30) OHV box - better ratios - and stronger too!
