If you look at this picture you will see the way the mounts are on the gearbox.

You will see that these are upside down. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! :(

I wonder if I can get them out one side at a time without disturbing anything, I live in hope, but I know its gonna be a real fiddle.[frame]Image[/frame]

In the meantime the starter motor and dynamo come in for some examination, I know I'm too early considering Ive not got the head back from its skim yet, but I wonder if these are both meant to be BMC green, the starter motor has fragments of dark green and engine black. Its nice to clean and paint the outer casings of these so they are more pleasant to handle during their strip down, If that is needed.[frame]Image[/frame]

Here's a shot of a really beautifully restored GPO van borrowed from my Ardingly show images in general discussion, the Dynamo looks BMC green same as the engine here, can't make out the starter motor in this shot though. It does show its nice to have a variety of colours in the engine bay, the lines and pipes provide a bit of a break to BMC green.

I was under the impression that starter and dynamo was green if you wanted original.

David

Your starter motor is as it left the factory - painted black and then half painted green when they sprayed the whole assembled engine :D :D

No point, easier to support the gearbox and do both together.

I wonder if this is why the G clamps were needed?

I noticed the gearbox mounting brackets as well since everyone I've see were the other way around. There is an offset to the bolt holes for the gearbox side so as long as you flip them side to side as they are turned over it shouldn't be a problem as long as the single hole is centered (vertically) along the line betweeen the two hole side. It sure makes tightening the single bolt easier.

with the gearbox supported underneath, it took the weight off the mount, and this made removing the bolts easier...[frame]Image[/frame]

So turning the mount the right way up was not the fiddle I was expecting, my trouble starts with the drivers side (uk) mount, as you say there is an offset to one side, this is going to make swiveling the bracket around difficult.[frame]Image[/frame]

both sides done, with the gearbox jacked up it wasn't half the problem I was expecting, thanks for spotting that guys, lucky it was pointed out before I got any further. Now whats next?, ah yes, I can get on with those nice new clutch linkage parts I got from ESM and Bull Motif.[frame]Image[/frame]

Thanks Malta MM, Nice to know this website reaches around the globe. The clutch linkages were my focus of attention today, the bits unbolted from the chassis came out ok, this is how they looked before I cleaned them up with my trusty angle grinder and wire brush, the new brass and nylon bushes strongly contrast against the old rubber single piece that was originally fitted

finally fitted in place, bit of a fiddle here, but an enjoyable one, you can feel rather than see the parts springing into place, the bracket on the gearbox side passes right through the circular bush there, the spring needs to be compressed by hand to allow the bracket to pop in on the chassis side. Its quite a relief both physically and mentally when it slips into position. The return spring is an easy fit and gives you real satisfaction when you see it all work.

The cleanup of the manifold went better than I expected, I posted something in the tech section and most said diy it, one or two even mentioned using coke as a cleanup agent, Ive placed some rusty parts in a container soaked with value coke, I'll let you know how that goes, the Manifold cleaned up ok with a wire brush and some hammerite Krust.[frame]Image[/frame]
