Carburetter needle

My traveller (1971, 1098cc) is running a little rich and idling a bit too fast and on investigation the piston in the carb was not dropping all the way back down to the bottom. Further investigation found I had a slightly bent needle (I have strightened it as best I could but obviously need a new one). I assumed the needle would be an AN one as on looking through various info found this to be the standard (rest of car is totally standard), but it is stamped GX. From what I can gather this appears to be a possible reason why I am running rich? Should I replace with another GX or change to AN?

If your set up is standard, you have answered your own question. Standard needle should be used and recheck carb tune after.

If the needle has been bent - worry about the jet - it will be worn oval by the bent needle. New jet required.

The GX needle is lightly richer at the top end.
Edit - by 'top end' I mean top end of the power band - which is the thin end of the needle!!

Jet will need to be centred correctly!!

Try the needle first then check plug colour, may save some work.
