Charging light

I have an alternator fitted and when starting the engine the red ignition light always goes out but whilst working on the Morris the red light didn't come on when I turned the key. I had been starting ans stopping it a bit to move it about. After some checking around and finding nothing broken or loose I started the Morris and checked the alternator was charging the battery - it wasn't. Left the engine running and whilst sitting in the Morris to think it over noticed the red ignition light illuminate and then go out right away. I checked the battery and it was now being charged.

Should I suspect the alternator as I haven't been messing about with anything that would have affected the ignition light that I can think of and it's now beginning to hurt my brain cell? Thanks in advance.

First thing to check would be the connector on the back of the alternator for loose or corroded connection.

Yes - I think loose connector too - although you say you checked. Could be loose bulb in the red light! Is it working reliably now - try it 10 times!!

Check the fan belt - condition and proper tightness.
