I think the point Kevin was making is - the 'Metro' dizzy would not fit an A series - because it's an A+ engine !

The tapping is probably related to the timing cover. If a duplex chain has been fitted it can fowl the timing cover splash guard and this needs to be ground off, they can also fowl other parts of the cover. You'll need to run the engine to hear for this as turning by hand will not make a load enough sound to be detectable.

I can also reccomend and HS6 or HIF44 carb for a 1275, they seem to go a lot better even in standard trim. The HIF44 being the better carb but the HS6 is more simple and similar to the HS2.

I read somewhere recently that a 1275 breathes in through a vented oil filler cap and out through the timing chain cover pipe. Since I have not got a vented oil filler cap, it has a flip top filler, then it must breath in through the rocker cover breather which at the moment is open to the atmosphere[frame]Image[/frame]

The vented oil filler just releases smelly/carcinogenic oil fumes into the car - avoid avoid! Doesn't matter which breather connects to the carb - as long as at least one does! But - under heavy stress - the open breather is likely to pour out fumes too - so I make sure it vents under the car in the air stream - so the fumes don't come in the car.

I think the point of the vented cap was to allow a small amount of air to be drawn through the engine so it could clear moisture more effectively. Which makes sense as the breathing system has to draw condensation from the top of the engine down into the crankcase and out through the timing cover! Either that or it was to provide an easier path for the air to be drawn through so it wouldn't suck any lubrication out of the distributor. I'd be more concerned about dirt getting in through that vent in the rocker cover. Luckily you have the PCV valve to control air flow from the crank case. Otherwise I think you would find the engine would idle very fast even when the adjustment screw is all the way out.

Your PCV system is probably the best - provided the diaphragm is in good order.
