Hi all,
I want to install a temperature gauge in the usual position in the head near the thermostat - BUT - can anyone advise what the thread size this hole is tapped with? I have a VDO gauge with NPT thread sender, so need the appropriate adapter.
Alternatively, can anyone advise the appropriate sender name/number/source vehicle that would fit straight in?
The various places I've been to so far are all shaking their heads and going cross-eyed. Their best guess was 3/8 BSF, but that barely starts in the thread.
I tried removing one in one of my other cars to crosscheck but the threaded section of the adaptor sheared off in the head, so now I need to source another one as well..... AArrggghhh!

I think it's BSP too-could very well be 3/8". The one I installed was Intermotor (Nottingham)Temperature transmitter Part no 5271 which I bought on fleabay.

Thanks for your responses!
To answer my own question, for others with the same problem, it turns out that the head is threaded 5/8 UNF, not BSP as suggested.
As most aftermarket gauges these days, like my VDO, use 1/8 NPT thread senders, you need a 5/8 UNF male to 1/8NPT female adapter - if you know what you're asking for, they are easy to find!
For example, a quick Google throws up many, this is just one example in the UK: http://www.speedycables.com/threadadaptors.html
I actually got one from this mob in Australia - fantastic service, overnight delivery to the opposite side of Australia : http://classicmotoring.net.au/cmos/inde ... b01f083a09
Got it, and installation took just seconds, and it's all working beautifully. BTW, because this is a parallel thread rather than a tapered pipe thread, you will need an O-ring, fibre washer or carefully applied PTFE tape under the head of the adaptor (NOT in the threads though) to properly seal the adaptor to the head.
