Just as an aside, what did you use to get the old seal off?

A 16oz hammer and a very long and large bladed flat hammer-through screwdriver, being careful to keep the blade on the seal assembly and not on the casting. Took ages to move it even a fraction because I was being so tentative and then suddenly went.

In the end I used Loctite Multi-Purpose Putty ('cos that was what was in stock!) to build up the missing metal and then filed back to the right shape. The rough surface left by the chunk gave a good key for the putty but I had to get it really clean (first attempt failed) - brake cleaner spray did the job. End result seems pretty solid and did not chip or break when tapping the new seal on!

I also applied some silicone sealant on the back of the seal just to be sure.

No leaks so far, so here's hoping that it will last....!

Thanks to all for (a) persuading me to try this solution (certainly a lot easier and cheaper than replacing the tailshaft casing!) and (b) for the the encouragement.

Shame I had to $£%^$£^% it up in the first place

It's been some while since I tinkered with cars and I've forgotten more than I care to admit. This forum is amazingly useful for known and ad hoc problems, and there are a lot of very knowledgeable and willing contributors. Long may it continue!!

P.S. Sorry but have run out of gold paint and anyway that would only be guilding the moggy

As was pointed out earlier it looks like it was an existing break and just hiding under the seal. If it was a fresh break it would have been clean and shiny. Don't blame yourself for exposing it. :D :D
