Speedo cable/grease

I have a new speedo cable that I was going to fit soon. I was thinking as it's possible to slide the inner part out if I should coat the inner part of the cable in grease? My only doubt is that perhaps grease might get spat into the speedo and thus damaging it.

I would expect it to come pre-greased. But pull it out a bit and check. If bone dry - wipe some grease thinly over it - and then clean off the top few inches - say 10" !
