tick tick sound speedo ..

Post by xpress »

not noticed it before, there's now a tick tick sound coming from behind the speedo, seems to coincide with the speedo raising and dropping around the speed that it's registering on the dial.

anyone?

The cable will be either fraid or not inline properly where it enters the back of the speedo,

It may just need realigning or tightening up a bit...

I wonder if this is the same tick I get.
Test with out engine running, turn ignition on and see if it ticks.
I posted about mine and was advised as normal and coming from fuel pump.

It will be difficult (although not imposible) to test the speedo without the engine running
It could be either a dry - fraid cable or the fuel pump (new owners often ask about the fuel pump noise), but it won't hurt to disconnect the speedo and run some oil down the cable to lubricate it. You could always take the car for a run with the speedo disconnected and if it still cliks then it is certainly the pump just performing as normal.

oh lol, i would definitely bet on the speedo cable.

i am quite fond of the tick of the fuel pump, having had one fail due to worn contacts!

yes, the tick of the fuel pump is quite reassuring!

:D

budgie, how did the clock appear to be knackered? what did you discover?

how does the mechanism work with the speedo and the clock?

well basically when i took the clock apart, that is removed the glass and pulled the needle off, took the two small screws on the face off, this exposes the gearing behind the face the number"wheels" are clearly visable and when i looked close at mine i could see the "teeth" where broken it was the speedo which had seized up with me which subsequently caused the cable to chew up.the cable is "squared" as it enters the rear of the clock which in its self is a square receiver don,t know how on earth the clock managed to chew up not sure which one went first the cable which caused the clock to jam or the clock to "break" causing the cable to fray either way remove clock check end of cable that enters clock if thats still square place a small screw driver into the back of the clock if it turns freely its ok if not renew hope this helps regards Mike. p.s.the other end fits into the gearbox "drive" in a similer way as the clock i.e. the gear box drive turns the cable which turns the mechanisim in the clock which transfers,by gearing ,the rotation from the gearbox to turn the mileage clock and the speedometer.
