carburetter identification

having just got a nice 3 branch exhaust and a new carb for primrose, i have hit a snag.

i know the carb came from 1275 mini or metro, but i dont know what model of su it is.

i ask, so i can adjust it correctly for primrose

could it be a HIF44 or something like that?

If it's from a 1275 then it's very likely to be an HIF44 (or HIF6 in pre-metric). It's certainly an HIF from the picture, measure if it's 44mm or 38mm across the throat (manifold side).

You will be fine with that carb - if it's for a 1275 engine ? Bit big for a 1098 - but will still run .

apparently according to nice bloke i bought it from it was from a metro.

As mentioned-could be 38 or 44mm. Easy to check across the manifold flange.
Is the 3 branch exhaust ex-Mini/Metro? If so you will have a lot of fun persuading the outlet to point the right way on Primrose!

the 3 branch is from another moggy, so the whole lot just fitted together nicely.

still abit of hesitation at low speeds, but floor the accelerator and that all stops and she and i are off down the road at quite a speed (not sure what speed as the speedo just uses its imagination, according to it, i can do 90)

Reading this, and then your post about "fiddling" with the mixture/ sudden points death, I can't help feeling you may be a little out on your carb/ needle matching.
What size is the carb? If it is a 44mm then it will be running a too rich needle in all likelihood, I'm sure if you then post the question, someone will point you at a good needle for your application, they are only about £6 each from Burlen.
If it is a 38mm it will be needled for a 998, and will be a trifle lean, again someone will point you at the best needle for a standard 1098 ( you haven't put a clever head or cam in from what I recall, if you have then AAA is a good needle, or ADK is a bit leaner which allows you to tinker with the needle profile if you are adventurous!)
It will be best to get the nearest needle before adjusting other the overall mixture rich/weak, or the timing.

i do really think that i need a proper needle for the carb. it is from a 1275, so it would be quite rich i suppose. ill measure the carb this morning and report back. hopfully someone can then give me an idea what needle i should have for it

having measured the part of the carb that goes next to the manifold, the result is 44mm, so that must presumably mean the carb is a HIF44, so using the info that linearaudio has given the carb needle is to rich, which seems about right.
so, ill start a new post which someone will hopfully notice, take pity and reveal the answer on which needle

Well - what needle is in at the moment - and remind us please of your engine spec ?
