It's can be difficult to diagnose some things remotely. What we need is a "hands-on" session - are you going to the National Rally, there would be no end of people willing to have a look.

Yes, that's normal.
Damn!!
Thanks for your reply
Its very strange.
I can feel the car jerking slightly and hear it, its like you were tapping your foot on the throttle 3 or 4 times a second while accelerating gently.

I had a similar problem recently which I thought was carb related. In the end it turned out to be the points gap had closed up. It was fine at high revs but showed hesitation accelerating from low revs. Worth checking.

Have you fitted new super-hard engine mounts recently ? And - is the exhaust system well clear of the body - not rubbing where it goes through the hole in the front bulkhead?

Thanks for your replies. I have tried the points and a different distributer - no improvement. I replaced the mounts to try and cure this problem - no improvement. I am sure its in the drive train, it jerks you about quite violently at small throttle openings. I have checked the brakes and bearings.

Maybe jack the car up - one rear wheel off the ground and the try turning the prop shaft by hand to see if there is any stiffness or tight spots.

my tuppence:
Has the diagonal plate in the crossmember that holds the rubber gearbox mounting cracked?
Are the rear tyres different sizes?
Is the rear axle and diff at the right angle?
Make sure the gearbox steady cable isn't too tight
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
