General engineering term for a ring spanner! Not especially Scottish as far as I know - but of course I have only ever heard Scottish folks using the term!

Then ew clutch plate and gearbox are about to go back in. If it works i'm buying everyone a beer. Don't hold your breath though. Never in my 23 years of taking things apart has anything ever gone back together and worked.

Here are the other gears. I'm assuming this is 1st and 2nd. Also, I don't think the gearbox drain plug is correct as it doesnt skrew all the way in and there seems to be a constant oil leak from the plug. When I drained the gearbox oil there was only a 1/4 pint or so. There's also a small amount of grey sludge settling in the bottom of the box.

When you put new oil in the box, where do you put it in? I'm also aware that you can use engine oil (20w50) in the box as well but then i've read on another post that a different oil is better. Id it worth me going out to get a different oil for the gearbox?[frame][/frame]

Did you remember to replace the input shaft bearing in the end of the crank ?

And dont use anything but 20w50 engine in the gearbox unless you want to damage it.

Thanks very much. At least I dont need to get more oil.

The only bearings i'm replacing are the spigot bearing and the thrust/release bearing. Is the input shaft bearing the same as a spigot bearing?

I can't see how the spigot beraring can be removd. Does the flywheel need to be removed first?

You either dig it out - or there is a method where you pack the hole with grease - then select a piece of steel bar or wood dowel that fits very snugly inside the bearing - start it in the bearing and then whack it hard. The idea is that hydraulic pressure will eject the bearing. Just be careful that the grease doesn't get you in the eye........

That picture is of 4th gear - you already showed us 3rd and 4th gear - the other end please! And - if the box is in good order, 10W40 oil in the gearbox will give less drag = better fuel economy.

aagghhhh

ok. The spigot bush is not coming out. i've tried the grease in the hole- hammer a bolt in trick to no avail. I've tried threading a bolt into the bearing then pulling but thats not getting it either. I'm worried that i'm attacking the wrong bit but the exploding diagrams in the manuals don't show the spigot bearing in any detail or even talk about getting it out. Would removing the flywheel make it any easier?

Not really - it's there in plain sight. It's just a soft sintered bronze bush. Drill it if you must! Or split it with small sharp chisel.

This, hopefully is 1st and 2nd gear. They look ok to me, no obvious damage or excessive wear.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

I'm such a numpty. Whilst trying to get the new bearing in, i've mishapen it. It obviously wasn't lined up straight when I started tapping it in and now its bent. I had a 7/16 socket to tap it in with a bolt running through to keep it straight and still cocked it up. Obviously i'll have to order a new one but won't get it until wednesday now.

The little dog teeth on 2nd gear are slightly more worn than the ones you showed on 4th gear - that's normal - 4th gear 'never' wears! Looks fine to me..... Can't see 1st gear because it's hidden under the selector. But it is likely a v good gearbox. Cherish it as a spare!

Let it soak in oil overnight.

Some say it should be boiled in oil!

Boiled?! Interesting. Not sure I have the facilities to do that.

bmcecosse - Your moggie must be in amazing condition. I assume you've done a full resto at some point.

Not me - and no -my Minor just gets by......... My Motto - Si fractum non sit, noli id reficere..... I do as little as possible to it. However in the past - I have completely re-shelled several Minis - and run a Rally Mini, and a Racing Mini - and looked after several other competition Minis for folk with more money than me!

The bearing is in!!!!!!! OH yes.

I soaked it in oil then had it in the freezer over night and it went in easily. I had it sloted over a bolt and tapped it in.

Now I just need to put the clutch back on, and the gearbox...l.and the crossmember, prop shaft......etc
