Rocker numbering

Post by sgray »

I'm at the page in the workshop manual entitled 'Rocker Adjustment' (AA.21) and it gives me the sequence for checking the rocker clearances..

but which is No.1 rocker? - bulkhead (back) or radiator (front) of engine. I can't find anywhere that tells me.

No 1 is usually regarded as being at the front (radiator) end on a straightforward layout like a Moggy.

It is left as an exercise for the reader as to whether it makes a jot of difference in this context.

Adjust the rockers using the rule of 9, no 8 open adjust no 1, no 7 adjust no 2 etc.
To save turning the engine over and over, turn the engine over on the handle and whichever valve opens, adjust the opposite one. Mark the rocker with a piece of crayon and when all the rockers are marked you have finished. Then go along the rockers and check each lock nut is tight.

Yes I can see why it might be a moot point.

and cylinders - are they normally number from the front too ? It's just the garage said No2 had low compression and now I have the old head on the bench I can take a look at the valves.

Cylinders are the same - number 1 at radiator (front) end.
