Back Seat Seat Belts

Post by EwenCameron »

I am hoping to buy my first Morris a 1957 Minor 1000 4 door saloon at the weekend but I am being nagged by my wife to ensure I get a Morris with back seat belts. The car I want to buy does not have any fitted :( . Can you please advise is it is easy to fit seat belts or can you recommend someone in Scotland who can fit. Just a bit worried for safety sake.
Many thanks Ewen from Inverkip. Hope to buy in time to go to the Peebles rally.

you can fit seat belts, however as far as I am aware there are no seat belt mounts fitted to that year, I think it was mid to late 60's when the mounts were fitted.
So you will need to ensure you strengthen the areas where you are mounting them.
I'm pretty sure there is a thread about seatbelts in the technical section, there may even be something in the technical tips area.

Another great Moggy orientated Forum.

Welcome to the forum! Yes - easy enough to fit, but no ready mounts in that car, so large plates are required behind the panels. Otherwise - just a case of drilling a few holes. Probably best to fit inertia reel belts - and if the front belts are 'fixed' - change them too!

AFAIK Minors never had factory mounting points for rear seat belts, only fronts.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Agreed. Rear mounting points were never factory fitted to any Minor.

You need Securon 254 seat belts for the rear. These are listed on the box as suitable for Travellers but are too short for that purpose, the Traveller requires 264s. Are you aware that the rear seat back releases and tips forwards leaving a large access hole into the boot. This makes seat belt installation considerably easier.

Many thanks for all the useful tips. Will hopefully get the Morris http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1957-MORRIS-MINOR ... 335d57bf2e from Leeds this week. A very welcoming messageboard.

I have just had a look at the advert and noticed that it advertises it as having a 1098 engine rather than the 948 which was the original. I would also check that it has the 1098 gearbox and the larger 8 inch front brakes. Also useful to know if the diff. has been upgraded from 4.55 to 4.22.
