sae 30 or 40

Post by //no.comment »

hey, im going to machine mart tomorrow, gonna get some other things and some oil for the shock absorbers, how much will i need and what would be better for everyday road driving, sae 30 or sae40?
unfortunately they only do sae30 in 5ltr bottles for £20
whereas they have sae 40 in 1 ltr bottles for £5
would sae40 make the ride to harsh?
anyone in the manchester area wanna go halves on a 5 litre!!!!!

£5 for 1 litre of SAE40 is a LOT to pay. Try a motorcycle place. You will only need ~ 0.5 litre - and that's allowing for several 'flushes' with the new oil - to chase out the old. SAE 40 will be ideal for the road.

Ooooh - you should only take the filling plug out at the top - put the 'plate' back on! Is there any oil in them - to drain out ??

not sure exactly what the valve comprises of but the lower plug has a long spindle with a spring on the end

That's the valve - and 3 tablespoons is probably all there was anyway. Now add new oil and flush that through a few times - before finally refitting the valve assembly - and top it up. Leave a small air space - and check it again weekly for the next couple of weeks.

well i thought that, but theres no flushing happening, no matter how much bouncing,

I think i may take it for a drive down the speed bumps on a road see what happens then!

You may need to put valve (and plate!) back on - then bounce - then drain out the old.........
