Breather set up

Post by SvMinor »

I got an SU Carb with the extra breather pipe on it,

Can someone post pictures of how the breathing is set up using this type of carb.

Many Thanks Mark

I would just use your own breather system and plug the extra breather on the carb to cut it off.

I got the carb to stop oil in the crankcase passing through the scroll into the gearbox bell housing.Ive no intention of blocking it up.

Is that all I need to do.and the air filter is left alone when I take the pipe off.

I know I need to put oil in the dash pot,do I fill it right up to the top and should I do anything else to my new carb before or after fitting.apart from getting the mixture right

Cheers Mark

Yes - connect to the breather from the rocker - well done finding the carb! What needle is in the carb ? And yes - fill half way with 3 in 1. Your crankcase breathing should be quite a bit better - and no more nasty gunge over the air filter element.

The needle has EB I think stamped on the end of it or it could be E3, The second digit is a little faint.

Can't remember what engine you have ........ I think the 'E3' needle used to be the 'tune up' needle for the small carb! See how it goes - set the idle mixture and then take it for a good hard run - then have a look at the plugs for colour - light beige is just right!

So - EB is the 'weak' needle for that engine. AN is the normal needle. Very little between them! But see how MUCH richer the E3 needle is!!!!!! See how it goes!![frame]Image[/frame]

I just took the needle out of my original carb and its stamped "AN",

Should I put this one in my "new" carb?

As you can see from the graph - little difference between EB and AN - only the E3 is significantly thinner - which should be obvious ? i would run the EB and see how it goes - should give better economy.

I got the carb fitted and took "Gladys" out for a run (my usual run that when I parked her up she would leak oil from the little hole in the gearbox with the split pin)

Guess what!!!

NO oil leak, incase you didnt hear me

NO OIL LEAK!!!!!!!

All it took was a change of carb, and different breather set up(due to the carb)If I had a Caravan you could call me a Happy Camper!!!!

But I dont so Im just HAPPY,over the moon you might say
