Gearbox question

Post by lesrollins »

Before i join the engine and gearbox together i just wondered if anyone as fitted the front modification plate with seal to the front of the gearbox, is it a good modification or just a waste of money. Second question, in the back of the gearbox where the prop shaft fits is there an o ring seal to prevent any oil leaks if so is it possible to replace this without taking the gearbox apart. Cheers

I think generally accepted that the fancy gearbox front seal is not necessary - the box only leaks if there is something seriously wrong with the bearings etc. Good boxes don't leak! There is no O ring at the rear - there is a felt seal and of course this can be renewed. However - if the tail shaft bearing is worn (in which the prop shaft runs) then some oil will leak past even with a new seal.
