how much free play should be on the clutch pedle

About 1" - that's 25.4mm for you metric chapies!

oh mine seems to have a lot, its lets the clutch off at the bottom 1" of the peddle

Risk of mashing 1st gear and the syncro - as the clutch may not be freeing properly.
