having decided to get a 3 branch exhaust, i am curious what carburetor arrangements i should use.
i would very much like to use the original carb, but i am struggling to find a manifold that will let me use the single 1 1/4 su. any ideas which other cars used it?
OR
should i go down the twin carb route? that begs the question, 1 1/4 inch or 1 1/2 inch?
peoples experiences would be nice as a guide.

Re: 3 branch exhaust
Definately go for a 1.5" carb. The original set up is quite restrictive. My current set up is Maniflow LCB, Titan Motorsports alloy inlet, 1.5" HIF38 carb (this is great as it is exactly the same as the standard 1.25" carb, just bigger) and a couple of other little mods. The top end speed is no different but low down torque is greatly improved. Hope this helps

Chris - your engine is hanging by a thread - low oil pressure and losing oil.......... The LAST thing you should be thinking of is 'tuning it up'! In any case -3 branch exhaust is way down the line of improvements to your engine - start with an MG Metro inlet manifold - and an HIF 38 carb - which BTW - is NOT just a bigger version of the standard HS2 carb! That would be an HS4.

Re: 3 branch exhaust
if money is an issue as a short term solution you can cut your current manifold up, remove the exhaust parts but be careful when separating the central part as they share a common wall with the inlet. it is best to leave a lot of exhaust manifold on in this area and then angle grind off the remaining parts slowly until it clears your three branch manifold

Re: 3 branch exhaust
its not really for the purposes of tuning up the engine, just making it more practical for everyday use. my exhaust has always caused my problems, so removing the troublesome joint, it wont sound as bad as it already does.
i do quite like the idea of butchering the current manifold, it is cracked already, so using the good bit, would be a good idea.
on a separate note, i am seriously considering getting a new engine from bull motif, as it would enable the car to last many many more years and cope with the 60 mile round trip i will be doing to go to uni in September

Re: 3 branch exhaust
Cant really comment on whether getting a new engine is worth all that money, but after bringing all my stuff back to uni with the car packed up to the eyeballs with basically all my possesions, it certainly seems like more than a 50 mile trip(for me). I had called the AA 4 times in the four days prior. (four different diagnosises to the problem, all wrong). I was dreading having to leave my car somewhere while i got help or something, leaving things like computers, guitars and shiney climbing gear alone with the minors not so up to date security systems!
It may certainly be worth the peace of mind if your student loan is burning a hole in your pocket! I know mine wont strech that far!

Seems an expensive way to do things! Just pick up a 'good' engine and fit that - while you overhaul your own - in your good time.
