repairing lip on fibreglass wing

Post by singleton »

Hello all, I have a problem with a fibreglass front wing. I had a pair which were a very poor fit at the rear edge where they bolt top to bottom of the flitch (big gap), so i went through my spares and found a pair which i offered up to the car and found they fitted great, problem is that one of them has a split on the lip of the arch. I think if i repair it with fibreglass it will just crack again? any advice on repair would be great. My only other option is to somehow build up the back of one of the other pair. I would go out and buy new ones but with baby on the way im trying to just get it done as near as i can and enjoy it. cheers

I'm no officianodo but without seeing the damage it's hard to suggest.
when you say lip of the arch are you refering to the area around the wheel? or the part whwere it attaches to the body?
I would imagine for fibreglass that if the latter it may not be sufficient, however if you do indeed mean the area around the wheel then since this does not bear any weight or take much stress than repairing should be enough, at least until circumstances can provide room for a more better solution.

I'm sure someone with the correct knowledge would be along to offer more accurate advice.

Would help if we could see a picture ? But probably if you can lay up a few layers of new FG inside the cracked section - then clean out the crack - and drill a small hole in the end of it - then fill up with body filler that should hold well enough ?

Yep, need pictures. As said above you need to drill the end of the crack to stop it spreading. If the area is stressed then you need to de-stress it first then build up with mesh and fibreglass sheet with resin brushed into it then filler to smooth out and make perfect.

and when you smooth out the repair do not, if using wet and dry, use water. The reason being that water / moisture will get into the fibre glass weave and cause micro blisters all over your new paint work
