Broken Connecting Rod 1098cc

Hello, I'm restoring my 1098cc engine and I have discovered a broken piece of the connecting rod, i guess this can not be fitted back in? (I think the answer's No Way!?)
I'm not sure how this happened but I would be interested to find out or possible causes so it doesn't happen again!
The piece of metal which you see in the photo was lying around in the sump.
Also i'm not sure where I can get a new or second hand connecting rod from any ideas?[frame][/frame]

A picture of the surface of the break would help.
There may have been a small fault or an inclusion in the casting.

You are correct to think it should NOT be used. I'm sure someone will have a spare one lying around - from an old engine. I see it is the circlip type - the very early 1098 conrods were 'clamp bolt' type - which is to be avoided.

The connecting rods are marked 12g124 - 12g127 can mini connecting rods be used?[frame][/frame]

If the Mini engine's a 1098 then yes.The 998's got a shorter stroke, but the rods may be the same, no doubt someone will be able to answer that?
Failing that, the best bet would be to either buy new, or see if someone's got a knackered 1098 with good rods.

It's actually a very new looking and 'clean' break! Appears to have been chipped off - goodness knows how ????? And I honestly don't think it will affect the strength of the rod in anyway - if it's just for a standard engine. I would file it smooth and USE it! Mini rods from later 848 and earlier 998/1098 engines can be used - as long as they are circlip type. ALL A (and A+ and S ) series engines have same length rod - EXCEPT the 970 S engine which has the same rods as other S engines (even same part numbers!!) - but are machined slightly longer between centres to push the pistons (which are same for ALL S engines) right to the top of the bore, even with the 970 short stroke crank.

I thought I could use mini rods with exceptions but wasn't quite sure thanks for the information.
When I was taking the pistons out on this particular rod, the locking tabs where so worn (breaking up) and hardly 'locking' - the bolts were only 'thinger' tight!
So who knows what could of happened !

Whereabouts are you? I,ve an old engine in my shed thats being used as a doorstop, if your close you can have that to pull the rods out of.

Easy to pull out - and not expensive to pay the postage..........

Just won a set of con rods off ebay (£5), guess I was lucky with that. Still interested in that engine though I will let you know.

Hope they are the right rods! Can you point to them on ebay ???
