ignition staying on

I have just bought a Morris Minor 1000 and it runs fine only problem is I cannot get the engine to switch off with the ignition key. It was going fine until I was charging the battery whilst it was still in the car when I sure I heard the fuel pump clicking so I took fuse out to be on the safe side then replaced it when going to start the car but noticed the ignition light still on and car started without using the key.

Also speedo and milometer (is that what it's called?) chucked when driving the car home after buying it.It was going fine then just chucked it suddenly.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Firstly regarding the speedo, check to make sure the cable hasn't come out of either the clock or the gearbox.

As regarding the ignition staying on, it could be:

A) A dodgy ignition switch, that happens to remain live.
B) Something is wired up wrong and allows power to bypasses the ignition.

The ignition switch and wiring were all fine until I took the fuse out and then replaced it,I have not altered the wiring in any way . It was the second fuse down at the drivers side.

I will have another look at the speedo cable and double check it has not loosened.

The fuel pump is not fused - so that was a 'red herring'! Probably the fuse is not correctly in the holder - and is connecting the non-ign circuits to the ign circuits. I intentionally did this when I was ~ 10 - to start my Dad's car so I could take it for a wee run up the street.........

Well try the fuse.. clean and emory all the contacts. If this doesn't work, disconnect the battery, take the single wire (there will be three wires and two go to the same side of the switch) and take it off the ignition switch, reconnect the battery and pull the starter. If it starts... then the ignition switch is ok and it is a wiring problem. If you have electrical testers they will tell you if current passes through the ignition switch whether on or off.
