Hi, two questions really that I feel probably have been answered before but for the life of me I can't find it!
I've got a Trafalgar Blue Traveller 1970. Paint work ok, been done by guy i bought it from, it's a bit orange peely and not very shiny so went to local paint shop and they quoted me £600 for a full respray including paint. Sounds cheap. He said he's been in America respraying old classic American cars, so sounds like he knows what he's doing.
Does it sound too cheap? how many coats should he be putting on and what paint?
My 2nd question....( ok, prob my 3rd) I hear that there are two different types of Trafalgar blue, one lighter than the other. But both have same code. how do I make sure I get the lighter one as I much prefer it?

2 pack paint is good and that is really cheap and i would take it.

It does sound cheap. Ask him how he intends to get around hockey sticks, headlights, rear lights etc or are you taking them off? Remember its all in the preparation. Have you physically seen any of his work, references from customers are worth a fortune in the long run. If you are happy with the references and his answers go for it.

It needs the application of elbow grease, prefferably electric powered to flat the paint then bring out the shine.
£600 is the price for a "blow over" not a decent paint job.
There will be an expert along shortly to explain how to do it ( I hope).

Who is doing the preparation? How much rust have you got? If it is being sprayed over rusty spot welds or seams it won't last 5 minutes.

The car has very little rust, tiny amounts, he said that he would be doing all the prep, sorting out any parking dents, any parts of the bodywork that need attention, I plan to go to him with a list of things I would like to see done and check that they will be sorted for the agreed price.
Still not sure though how many coats I should be expecting him to say he will do? 1? 2? 10? 5,000,000?
And what paint should he be using 2pack?

We can't tell what paint he will use, it's something you'll have to ask. 2pack is very hard wearing but if your car is currently painted with cellulose the flex in the cellulose underneath will crack the 2pack in time. There may be a barrier paint to put over the cellulose first to stop it cracking, but I'm not too sure. If your car is cellulose it will chip very easily, if it is 2pack a dink with something metallic won't damage it at all. If it is a blow over, then only one coat will be applied.
