price to spray wing?

Been quoted a price to spray rear wing panel the fuel filler is on and the edge of roof(side of back window) £250,do you think thats a good price or not guys?

Depends on the prep required really, but it seems a realistic price to me, could even be more if the boot lid, filler neck and rear wings are removed. If 2K you will easily spend £50-60 in materials, if priming also add a further £25 plus.

Or just buy a nice big rattle can and do it yourself! £250 - good grief...........

As Jonathon says, it's all in the prep work. If you do it yourself then you will save a bit but do it wrong and the painter won't be happy. Spraying a car or part of a car well takes a lot of time, patience and skill, that is what you are paying for. So I would say £250 is a reasonable price. As for the rattle can, well, enough said

Done carefully - the rattle can will do a perfect job! Obviously you don't just plaster it on - waving it about like a garden hose. With care, warm weather, pre-heated can - an excellent job can be done for very little money. That quote is 'madness' - extrapolate it around the car (4 wings + 4 doors + bonnet + boot + roof) = ~ £3000 !! For a respray - good grief.

90% prep and 10% paint. so not to bad on price. ive recently got a saturday job in bodywork. so theirs alot of ins and outs for a perfect job.

What's the problem with suggesting DIY alternatives and half way houses?
Like all price questions there isn't a simple answer.
How much would the same job cost in Kensington? or kirkcaldy?

Didn't I read here that Rolls Royce hammered on paint then relied on a team to flat and polish it?

I see paintwork on brand new cars that is orange peeled , they look OK from a short distance, how much is that worth?

My car has one wing that has been recently sprayed to a reasonable standard.
All it does is show up how faded and patchy the rest of the car is.
How much was that worth?

It also depends on how much you value the car at,If the cars worth 500 then 250 is too much cos it dosen't make the car worth 750,So a diy at £10 or £20 makes it worth doing or just touch it up and put up with it, Different if the cars worth £3000 of course.Even then it applies a full respray 2 t0 3 K, Moggie now worth 6k

Here lies the potential downfall of the Minor. Folk cannot afford to have them rebuilt, sprayed , or intensively welded by pro bodyshops, and with the best will in the world a high % of home resto's are simply furthering the decay of a vehicle or if built incorectly , are robbing the true enthusiast of a car which would otherwise have had a good future. The have a go mentality is fine when dealing with non essential areas, but have no place whatsoever in the correct methods of a structural restoration, for both the owners and public safety, once the vehicle is back on the road.
Whilst the value of Minors remains rediculously low the chances for cars to be repaired correctly and with longevity in mind simply diminishes. I by no means decry all DIY resto's as we are well aware of some very worthwhile ones on this and other Minor Forums.
Re the original question , yes it seems good value from a pro bodyshop. Offering advice re diy is an aside really and not relevant to the original posting

That's all very well if you have a conscientious restorer to hand, but just about any body shop you go to will only be concerned about how it looks on the ouside.
They'll leave in inside with the black "paint" it came with untouched which is hardly best practice.

Probably true, but there is a vast difference between car repair shops and restoration companies, and its not always shown in the costs.
Its also upto the customer to research the work that they wish to outsource and make sure that it is performed according to their wishes. There are plenty of us on here who are willing to offer free professional on here or at the end of a phone call, so 'one' has no excuse for not knowing the proceedure, costings and expectation of the service provider.
Professional costs for mechanics.bodywork etc will always be higher than DIY but in theory one will always get what one pays for. A full resto or simply a proper respray will always cost more than the value of the car. Even a £30K resto would only bring the resale value upto around the £8-12 K mark assuming the 'rule of thumb' value of the car being worth 1/3 of the resto value.

It is always going to be more costly to out-source.
But for a car thats worth £10k in A1 condition spending £30k to get it to that condition is still going to leave you with a car thats worth £10k
