Can anyone tell me if it would be ok to drive to a garage to have a repair done on an untaxed car, the person who asked this question does not want to get it taxed untill the repair is carried out as the parts may take some time to arrive in this country.

Re: Road Tax
The only time an untaxed car can be legally on the road is when driving to a pre booked MOT. It must, of course, be insured also. So, if you get it MOT'd at the same time you should be OK.

Re: Road Tax
Thanks PSL, the question was on behalf of a friend, I do believe that the car in question does have a full MOT and upto date insurance. I also believe that when he first took it into the garage to have the repair done they said that they would have to order the parts and that it may take some time. Each time he rings them they say that the parts have not arrived yet and its now over 3 months and he thinks that they don't want to do the job and that he wants to take it some-where else now.
Re: Road Tax
I assume the car in question is not tax free then.....?

Re: Road Tax
Your friend should take his car somewhere else. Any garage that wants to stay in business will have daily deliveries of parts. The days of waiting for months for replacement parts have long gone.
If the car is not taxed it will need to be on SORN.

And if its on a SORN it cannot be on the road unless going to or from a pre booked MOT test.

Re: Road Tax
i believe you can also drive it to a garage (pre booked again) to get work carried out for the MOT.. but the garage doing the work should know all this..
