Organising spares

Post by southerly95 »

Living pretty much in the middle of nowehere is great apart from running up high fuel and maintenence bills. i maintain all 3 of our Morris Minors that are all used regularly. The prob I have is organisning spares - I try to keep maintenance and frequently used items in stock and try not to hang onto other stuff, e.g. used indicator light lenses which seem to 'grow'. I keep stuff all over the place but need to pull it together in one place, so how do you all do it? Thinking of some kind of storage unit I guess ....

Parts I keep are:

- Most gaskets including a head kit and several cork rocker cover gaskets, diff and rear axle gaskets/rubber rings
- Screw on and paper element oil filters, air filters, fan belts for dynamo and , the 3 types of water hoses and clips
- All light bulbs including headlamp sealed units and lens gaskets
- Spark plugs, points, condensers, coil, fuel pump and fuses
- Brake shoes front and rear, wheel cylinder repair kits
- Commmonly used nuts, bolts and washers

The rest I order from BM or ESM as I need them. Thoughts welcome :)

i keep my spares in a set of plastic boxes which are numbered.. I keep a list of what is in each box on a spread sheet which contains a description of the parts and a catalogue reference number where ever possible.. i do have a life honest!!!

I used to keep my spare parts in a tool shed, along with mounds of other stuff. Now they're in my bedroom closet, along with mounds of other stuff. :D I was lucky, though -- my Moggie came with a boot chock-full of spares: everything from a complete new engine gasket set to new hub ball-bearing sets to an old gearshift ball. 8)
The way to a man's heart may be making food, but the way to my heart is buying me car parts!

Lots of shelves in the garage, under the work bench, in the pit, in the garage loft, in the trailer, old axles in the shed. Anywhere I can find space! I have resisted the temptation to keep spares under the bed, I might get some objections from my wife. The loft is already filled with non car stuff!

Hmm in plastic boxes on racking, sometimes even with general descriptions such as 'electrics' or 'cooling'. Seems to grow and grow. I've got a whole spare (Fiat) gearbox in pieces and a couple of broken starter motors for repair if they become unavailable new. I think I've managed to get all of the spares out of the flat now.

My best organised spares are in a chest of drawers in the shed.
There are 4 drawers, top one is electrical, bottom one is brakes I think there is one for trim for the life of me I can't think what's in the other one
Apart from that there are bits in the rest of the shed, the house and the garage and my mothers garage.
There is some order, a shelf in the kitchen has modifications that are awaiting fitting.
Maybe I'm not the best person to advise on organisation :)

I made the mistake of moving from one lockup to another by moving the stuff first and the racking last. So I had to put everything in a pile on the garage floor to start (mostly in plastic boxes so not a literal pile). Then I had to move the stuff outside to make a bit of space for the first rack, load up that rack, realise that the second rack connects to the first from behind, unload rack, fit second rack and so on.

So I now don't know where my stuff is anymore either.
