Contact Breaker Points

Post by Courthouse/Tom »

Back again !.
My Moggie has always been a bad starter from cold (6/7 turns on the starter),first time when hot.I went through all of the usual checks, plugs, distributor cap, leads, rotar arm,(bought new coil through MMOC)repaced condenser. The only item that was obviously worn out were the c/b points, which ive replaced twice(gap .40mm).
Since ive replaced the points,it just wont start at all, when i flick the points open, theres no spark.I'm now pulling my hair out----------------what have i done wrong--------missed ?????. :( :(

Sorry, still dont get it.I know that theres only 2 wires involved, but can someone describe the fitting of them in an extra-idiot-proof way, perhaps with a sketch, showing what goes where ?.i'm sure that over the course of time, many a MMOC member, who falls foul of these little demons, will find this to be of a great help !!.
Thanks,Tom :(

It's all in the workshop manual. Just put the old points back exactly as you found them meantime until you have read up and understood what's involved.

Occasionally new points will have an oil film on them and won't make contact w/each other. The trick is to take a clean narrow strip of brown paper or business card, and with the points in the closed position, gently open them, put the paper between and pull it along to wipe them. Doesn't take much.
This doesn't work very well with used points as they are not flat and smooth anymore.
