I've just bought my first Minor and in all honesty I have very little mechanical knowledge (the other half's a mechanic so hopefully he'll be able to sort out anything I can't).
I've discovered a knocking noise when turning right which seems to be coming from the driver side rear....after climbing underneath the MInor, I found alot of grease around the driverside rear bush and there's a small amount of oil(?) coming from the diff ..
First thing to check is the easiest- are all the wheel nuts tight??
The next obvious is to check that all suspension nuts and bolts are tight. Have a look inside the brake drum, other than that, a decent inspection by your mechanic other half should reveal the cause of the knock.
If your other half is a mechanic then renewing all the suspension bushes (including the damper link bushes) would be a good idea as these do eventually wear on the minor and are cheap parts.
Welcome to the Forum! Does sound like it's probably rear spring or damper suspension bushes. But maybe it's just the exhaust knocking against something ?? PM sent with more detail.......
Hi Tina! Welcome to the messageboard. I owned that Minor a couple of years ago - did you buy it from a Matt in Newtownards?
We have a very active branch of the club over here and are running a rally in Bangor on 24th April. Heres a link to our site and you can access entry forms from there as well. http://www.mmoc-ni.co.uk/index.htm[fram ... 72529_2647[/img][/frame]
Thanks guys! That gives me lots to do when I get home! First thing I checked was the exhaust but it's firmly in place.
Yes David, the car came from Matt in Ards. It was traded in to the dealership I work in as a scrappage car but I rescued her!
David, the only thingI'm not sure of is whether she's had an unleaded conversion. Do you know??
Don't worry about 'unleaded' it is absolutely NOT necessary! Just run the car on unleaded and set the valve gaps to 15 thou on the exhausts (12 on inlets) - and check/reset every 3000 miles.
Scrappage, Im shocked! I thought Matt was a propper old car man. Anyway Im glad you have rescued it. I didnt do an unleaded conversion but Matt may have done. I know he had some engine work done - though I dont know why as it was the best 948 engine I had ever driven!!!
I owned it about 3 years, prior to that a Doctor had it for about 15 years but only covered about 3000 miles in it. Before the doc bought it was in a state, he had new sills fitted and the new back wings and all new brakes. I did qite a bit of welding to the boot floor and the A posts. I fitted a second hand back valance and quite a few bits of chrome.
