It still runs on 24 month old fuel

Post by RobThomas »

Once round the farm to give the tyres a stretch after a winter in storage. It ran quite happily on some fuel that has sat in the tank fo rnearly 2 years so it shows how poor the fuel must have been in the early 1950s.

Microlite? MICROLITE???????? :x

Wash your mouth out.

Anyway, My Group A aeroplane runs on standard unleaded petrol which gets drained off after every run and dumped into the nearest can for recyling into lawnmowers etc. Avgas bu66ers up the valves, plugs and bearings.

You must have a lot of lawnmowers!

The s/v engine was capable of running on 80 octane pool petrol so 95 octane is a real treat. When my engine is rebuilt it will be running on petrol that has been in the tank since before the last National Rally (I hope). That reminds me, I've got a 5 gallon Jerry can of 4* which I have not yet used.

Rob,
I am amazed that 24 month old fuel still powers the old sidevalve! That is really good to know.

I can't use fuel that is 6 months old in my modified 1000! Mind you that's a 1380cc engine with 10.5:1 compression using super unleaded octane boosted to around 100 octane. Strange how it seems to 'go off'.

Mike,
How long have you had that 4 star leaded in your jerry can? What about it 'going off'?

I would think the lead would be the least volatile bit, it will probably always be leaded.

I've just bought a tin of PUTOLINE fuel preservative that you mix into a tank before it goes into storage. It suggests it will keep fuel good for more than a year. Worth a try?

I might use it in the Traveller as that has a 1275 leaded engine, the side valve is unleaded there would be no point in using it in that.
