Kingpins and disc brake sleeves
Hello all
I have a Morris Traveller that after 220k needs its kingpins replacing as there is slight wobble in the bottom trunnions, even when I tried new trunnions on the kingpin.
I removed the kingpins last weekend in order to replace them new for old (can anybody recommend a good source).
Now the problem, I have a disc brake conversion based on the Marina setup with modified hubs (steel) and taper roller bearings. The inner bearing is fitted over an aluminium sleeve on the stub axle. I cant remove the inner bearings let alone the aluminium sleeve. I can buy new bearings easily, but I dont know of a supplier for the sleeves? I tried a puller onto the caliper mounting bracket to try and pull the bearing off the sleeve, but I stopped when the bracket looked like it was going to bend. I have soaked everything in WD40. I thought that I would post for advice before I resort to a blowtoch and a hacksaw. I guess its held on with threadlock or something like that.

try any of the moggy people..
esm is the first place i would try, however when I called them last year they had none in stock but were expecting some in "soon"

New kingpins are now available again after a long famine. I'm sure someone with disc brake experience will be along soon, but an 'aluminium' spacer doesn't sound too good. Presumably if heated it will expand enough to slide off.

Thanks for all your encouragement. I tried heat tonight, but nothing moved so I removed the rollers allowing me to remove the brake caliper support plate for better access. So now I am left with the remains of the inner roller bearing over the aluminium sleeve well and truly stuck on the stub axle. I am hoping to borrow another puller and give it another go and try even more heat. I think this is going to be a long project!

It is possible to press the complete stub axle out of the kingpin assembly. With a powerful press obviously!

I had a similar problem. Can you get a thin metal wedge between the back edge of the sleeve and the face of the stub axle? Seem to remember having about 1/8" gap that was just enough. The last few bearings I have had have already been pressed onto the sleeve (which should be steel) and didn't come off on removal. Before they usually pulled off leaving the sleeve on the stub ready for the next bearing.

Hello all
I just thought that I would post an update as I have had some success today and it might help somebody else.
First off I have found a supplier (BM) showing the bearings and spacers on their website so they are still available.
I have discovered that the spacers are indeed steel and not aluminium, thanks for spotting that "kittyfell".
So this is what I was faced with - from left to right. The Marina disk brake caliper support bracket, the bearing oil seal (38 x 52 x 7 Marina), part of the sleeve showing, the inner taper wheel bearing (Marina L44649) pressed over the sleeve and the kingpin stub axle.

I called in at a well known tool supplier (MM) on my way to work this morning and bought a "14 piece bearing separator puller kit".
I was able to get this puller behind the bearing itself - I am going to replace the inner ones anyway as I tried the blowtorch on them last night. It came away with a few words of encouragement.

This left me with the sleeve still stuck on the stub axle. Luckily with the brake caliper bracket and oil seal out of the way I was now able to get a good grip with the puller at the rear edge of the spacer as "M25Van" suggested and this came off too. Photo shows it part removed.

Now the other side had had a bit of rough treatment with a pry bar last night and I had removed the bearing rollers and the cover leaving just the inner race on the sleeve on the stub axle. As the ridge of the race was easy to get to, I pulled on this and as it came away it brought the sleeve with it too. Now I had the bearing race with the sleeve still stuck inside it to separate. With due respect to HMQ, a couple of 2p coins came to the rescue and they were exact size to push the sleeve back out of the bearing.

So thanks to Mr Clarke for making the correct tool for the job.
The sleeves are not too bad, just a few scuff marks to gently file off on the oil seal end. Next time I will only apply a small amount of nut lock between the inner bearing and the sleeve.
Now to find time to get to a supplier to exchange my king pins for a good set and try and reassemble everything in time for the MOT next month. I hope I don't have to remove the steering arms from the king pins.
The outer, smaller bearing is a metric one numbered 30203.

Yes, well done. Your pullers look alot more professional than my metal wedge.
I wonder if it's too early to start my Christmas list yet?
ESM sell the bearing kit and spacers and are alot cheaper than BM on these or use your original spacers (if they clean up ok) and buy the bearings seperately to save even more.
