Ouch! (Well almost)

Post by MMaurice52 »

Having assembled and installed the SV engine in my MM and confirmed the new engine is OK I decided to start rebuilding the other engine I have. I found this in the cooling system:

I then remembered I had one just like it, left over from the engine rebuild that is now in the MM!

So I removed the coolant side cover:

and installed the brass thinghy where it belongs. I imagine it was to restrict the coolant flow from such a large hole?

It guess it must be to restrict water flow. I wonder if you only have it with a pumped system?
I dont remember one being fitted to my unpumped system - and I didn't fit one when I fitted the pump!
The only thing I found in my block water ways was what looked like a nail! I think it was left over from the sand casting process!
Lovely looking Alta!

Alan,

Both the un-pumped and pumped engines had the part. The original engine in my MM was un. I installed a water pump from the engine that was pumped.

I can take measurements and send them. Or I can fabricate one from brass if you would like.

It should be in all USHM3 engines but of course not in USHM2 engines. I think it fell out of my previous engine when I took the water jacket off. I originally thought it was some sort of spring tensioner. I had better check that there is one in my engine when it is stripped.

Thanks Mark, but I reckon that as I have done 80,000 miles without it, it should be ok for a bit more!
