Re: wires
In the States you can get most colors of wire -- including double colors -- at just about any automotive shop, and red and white wires are probably the most common. But I can't help you in Britain.
The way to a man's heart may be making food, but the way to my heart is buying me car parts!

Re: wires
Autosparks are extremely helpful, and sell most wiring accessories you'll need.
Vehicle Wiring Products are also good, with perhaps more stuff like lights and switches, but a bit more impersonal.
Or go down to a scrapyard armed with a penknife and wire cutters, and strip lengths of whatever colour you fancy out of cars there that still use colour codes as against tiny numbers.
Scrap washing machines are another good source of coloured cable in lengths up to a couple of feet or so.
