Shouldn't there be something in here ??

After replacing the rocker-cover gasket today (yes, I know, how technical am I ?), I thought it was time I checked the air filter.
But when I took it apart there wasn't anything inside it

Now isn't there supposed to be a cone of paper or something inside - I can't see how it would filter much without it. Confirmation please ?

Yes. There should be a paper air filter in there like this one:

You should probably wonder if there is an oil filter in the bowl - - or more likely, the filter is there but the support plate and spring are missing.......

948 is a much smoother engine and revs better too in my opinion!
