still promlem starting

Post by bleddyn »

hi , as previous poblem starting, starts instantly, will idle for few seconds but will cutout, start again run for few seconds again and the same, we have changed carbs, distributer, checked all the electrics, have double checked tdc, and yes 1342 is correct ,soon as it starts we try to fine tune carb and she'll have none of it , plenty of petrol comeing through,it will start though when choke is off and we dont use accelerator, plugs are blackening up straight away, keep cleaning them, carb adjustment right to top to weaken mixture, anymore suggestions please, thanks

ok so carb is all good then

so when you say the plugs are sooted up. is it oily black or dry sooty black

have you checked to make syure the choke is coming off sufficiently when the knob is pushed in as the symtom is running rich

Certainly sounds like very rich running - float bowl overflowing ? If you switch on ignition - does the fuel pump tick away continuously ?

you say the car runs for a few seconds..the choke should be out for some time when running on idle minutes rather than seconds.. I would expect the plugs to be dark if the car is still running with the choke out.. obviously if it is running for a few minutes ignore what i have just written.

So - you start the engine - can you get it to rev up using the accelerator ? Can you 'keep it going' - or does it just die away no matter what ? If so - points to lack of sufficient fuel delivery. I suggest a flow test for the pump - run the delivery hose into a pint can - and get it to pump the pint - measure how long it takes.
