Hi Guys,
Can anyone detail the modifications to the 1098cc flywheel to allow it to fit the 1275cc Ital A+ engine?
The Ital crank end doesn't have a locating spigot for the flywheel centre, just a flat "lump". Surely it's not a "good engineering practice" just to use the 6 flywheel bolts and 1 dowel?
As you may have guessed, I'm still after a suitable flywheel for my 1275 engine.

I agree - not good practice - but that's what you have to do. Use the Ital flywheel as the drill guide for the Minor fly - and drill nice tight holes.

What fitting did the original fly wheel use?
If you are going to end up with the same number of fixings I would count it as "acceptable engineering practice".

Not good engineering practice to rely on fixings to locate the centre position of the flywheel. Any decent job would use a locating ring, like wheels tend to, to ensure concentricity, with the bolts performing a clamping/ anti rotation function.MarkyB wrote:What fitting did the original fly wheel use?

There looks to be a recess in the crank end, before it reaches the spigot bush. I wonder if some form of turned adaptor could be fitted to centralize the flywheel. I'm looking at a manual, so not sure if the actual items lend themselves to this until I look.
I'm also seaching for the owen burton booklet to see what that has to say. I think the ital flywheel had a recess to match the crank.

Well, I'm not going to write another lengthy reply after the last 2 I posted failed to appear. Just to say a centralizing spigot is available!

I set mine up and drilled very carefully. Two holes line up and so good alignment is possible. After drilling - I set it all up and 'clocked' it - and it seems fine. Bolts are fixed in with Loctite and aren't going anywhere. I'm not sure how a 'spigot' would work ? There's not much room -there is a spigot fitting for use with Ford gearbox - but that's to take the oilite bush to support the gearbox first motion shaft - not to centralise the flywheel on the crank.

I found the owen burton book and got the info from there, it mentions the bolts are not enought to attain centralization, and that a 'special register spigot' should be used to assure flywheel balance. This to me makes sense and as others have hinted its not good practice to do otherwise. I can't say what this spigot looks like, but possibly one would be available commercially.
