hole in floor above the cross member.

Post by deano69 »

I found a soft patch in the floor when i removed the front seats and upon investigation the softness was bitumen used as padding to fill a hole in the floor.once removed its left a 3 inch square hole directly above the cross member, where it meets the passengers side sills. The problem is that between the floor and the x member theres a gap of 1 1/2 inches, so what should i do when i have a patch welded in?Leave the gap between teh floor and the x member?

Cheers Dean

Sounds like you need to cut out part of the floor affected and weld it back so your floor sits on the xmember and the hole is repaired. If you can take a picture it would make your description clearer. Have a good poke around the floor to make sure this is just an isolated patch and the rest of the floor is solid.

Cheers for the reply but it would seem that i had my rose tinted glasses on and the hole is the least of my worries after a car savvy mate finally looked it over and pronounced it a s***heap and a patch work quilt of less that good quality welded repairs underneath.Seems all the prep work ive been doing is for nowt sadly.

You may be better then just putting in a new floor panel?

Would it be possible to upload some photo's so we can do a written assessment and advise?

Take off the sill covers, the sills may need looking at too.

Also, is this a run around moggy or is it currently off the road?

Im currently only able to access internet via local library so cannot upload pics.

The sill covers have come off and revealed the need for a new front d/s sill and some repair to rear d/s sill. This didnt put me off but my mates comment is concerned with the entire underneath and he believes it would need to be put on a jig in order to maintain alignment whilst some repairs he can see needs doing are done.He also said he would be very surprised to see me driving it on the road legally. He thinks's is to far gone. The car is not a run about, it has been off the road for 21 years.I'm gettinga second opinion from a body repairer but i suspect i will end up breaking and keeping the parts for the one i get that is mot able and roadworthy.

Has a Minor or classic car savvy person looked at the car though? Some one in the trade would write of many a salvagable car due to cost. It all depends how much you can do yourself though, if paying someone to do the work it generally becomes uneconomical. Sills and floors are all replaceable, many on here brace the car to keep the shape. Check out this link:
