Jack Daniels and Ferguson Four Wheel Drive

Post by ErnstBlofeld »

It's only tenuously related to the Minor, I know, but what do we know about this:
At this point ('52) Issigonis left Morris for Alvis, but when Len Lord
persuaded him back in '55, Issigonis immediately requested Jack to re-join
him, which was agreed. Two Alvis people, Chris Kingham and John Shepherd
followed shortly and a new design team was created. Jack had to wind up his
then design efforts on the Ferguson 4WD car and the Salerni torque
converter to start on XC9001, a vehicle within the plan rectangle of the
Minor, but which also had an early version of the Moulton Hydrolastic
suspension.
It's from an on-line obituary for Jack Daniels, and it's any information about the Ferguson four wheel drive car I'm after.

I know of the Ferguson prototypes the R4, and R5 but on reading the obit something chimed in my memory. I used to read "Mini Magazine" and still read "C&SC" and I recall reading something about BMC's work with Ferguson on a 2.2 litre flat four engined, four wheel drive saloon. Apparently, this was a serious contender for production until General Nasser started acting up, and the Corporation's efforts were directed toward the development of the Mini.

Does anyone know any more about this project?

I know of a Ferguson 4WD Triumph Stag, if that is any use and could put you in contact with the owner

The Ferguson 4wd system was used on the Jensen Intercepter FF. Identifiable from the standard Intercepter by the double air vents on front wings.
