Gearstick knob question

Post by katy »

Do the MM gearstick knobs have a metal insert? Or are they just threaded into the composite material?
I was looking at one on e-bay, asked about the threads inside and was told that it's just threaded into the knob material.
All the ones I'm familiar with over here all have a metal insert. Having a hard time to find one to fit the MM as most of them over here have either 3/8" NF or metric threads and the gearstick is either 5/16" NF or 5/16 BSF, not sure which.

The original Series MM gearknob was a rubbery item with a threaded nut which screwed on to the gear lever. However the nut usually flopped around in the gear knob which made for a not very pleasant gear change.
I am hoping to have a batch of gear knobs made out of an improved material in the not too distant future. I just need to find a decent original to copy.

Ours is a '61 Minor 1000, but I'm not sure about the gearbox, it has a ribbed gearbox and a 1275 engine.
The gearstick that was in the car was a 2 piece with rubber in between and it kept coming apart, it had a 3/8" NC thread on it. I obtained one that looks like the one shown on page FFF.2 of the workshop manual but need a knob for it.
How are the knobs that the vendors sell? Places like Bull Motif and/or EMS?
Do they have the insert?

You have either a 1098 or 1275 box. As PSL says, get one from Regalia, leather or varnished wood. I would recommend the varnished wood as it does not get sweaty in hot weather. They have rubber inserts but they screw down on the gear lever and are very secure.
That should be worth a discount on my next purchase :)

Is there a way to tell which one we have? Is there a tag, numbers stamped or cast in to identify what we have?
TIA
