Decide what size you want and where you are going to put it. Make sure it is suitable for a 4 cylinder engine. Have a look around for a classic circular rev counter, possibly off a Midget or a Triumph if there are any left. If you can, follow the wires and make a note of what goes where.

Hi Tom, You will need one, as Mike says, for a 4 cylinder engine, suitable for negative earth and electric (not cable driven)
Have a search on ebay for 'TIM rev counter' and you will find some for ones for about £40 - you could also get one from a Midget or something, but most of these are about 100mm in diameter, which you might find difficult to fit somewhere neatly

Hello Tom,

the long white wire is the sensing cable and needs to be connected between the ignition switch and the coil. The two blue wires look to be earth and supply. I don't know if there are any markings on the casing, but it looks as if it can be wired for either polarity. I would guess the short blue is earth and the longer one is the supply. But unless you know what polarity the car it came from is chancy to connect it if the terminals are not marked?

Hello Tom,

connecting it reverse polarity could damage the unit. No other markings at all?

As a side point, there's a particular series of Smith's rev-counters (if it's a classic Smith's rev-counter) which won't work with the Aldon electronic ignition. It is listed as a 'won't work' thing in their manual - you need to send it off to get it modified (I think they fit new internals).

I have one, it doesn't work. It kind of waves around in a generally vague way, and at some point I'll send it to them. Unless Jonathon did it already, it was on the list but may have fallen off as being not-really-that-important.
