gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
hi everyone i'm 18 still quite new to my moggy and really stuck here, i broke down last week, pulled off in 1st got a clank clank clank noise from gearbox, put her in 2nd and she made a loud bang then i couldnt get her in gear once i took her out of gear so rolled to a halt. forced her into gear and started her up but lifted clutch and didnt move just stalled. i put a new clutch in just 2 months ago and upon removal of gearbox this week the centre of the pressure plate had come off the springs and was sitting loose on the shaft, had ruined the carbon thrust bearing, so i figured it was my fault knocking it off the clip when i put the new clutch in. Bought another clutch kit this week, put it all in correctly. on inspecting old clutch plate it was fine. Started her up and she makes a clanking noise even in neutral and wants to stall unless i put my foot on the clutch then the engine turns free as if something is in contact that shouldnt be. she goes in gear but make horrendous noise and jumps forward and back not smoothly. sometimes it wont even move it will simply stay still and eventually stall with clutch pedal is released when in gear. I could hear a whirr a week before i broke down and planned to inspect but she broke down first. i am going to remove the gearbox again but i really dont know whats wrong whether i need a new gearbox or what im really stumped guys! any ideas? sorry for the essay :/

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
That is a lot to absorb at once.
What engine/gearbox do you have?
When you took the clutch out did you inspect the gearbox?
Did you follow workshop manual instructions when you replaced the clutch?
You are going to have to take the gearbox off again and there is a good chance something has broken inside.

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
sorry for too much info! when i replaced the clutch before christmas it wwas because the clutch was slipping and needed replacing, all instructions were followed and it was fine afterwards so i didnt inspect the gearbox. i have a 1098cc with standard 4 speed box in a '67 minor. when i first started driving the car after it had been off the road for a few years last summer it whirred in 3rd gear so i changed the oil and it seemed to be ok. looks like i might need to look for a new gearbox then?

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
I have had a 1098 box seize up on me whilst on holiday, I had to fit a new box in a campsite field. Fortunately it was in a van so I took the wooden floor out to work on it.
If you can see any problems with the clutch you may be OK but I would inspect the box. Try turning it by hand in each gear.
are you using engine oil in the gearbox?

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
wow that's dedication!
yes i've used 20/50 oil in the gearbox same as whats in the engine, will have the gearbox out again tomorrow, should i just turn the shaft with the splines that meets the clutch plate with the box engaged in each gear?

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
It sounds like some teeth may have broken off 1st gear (or the mating laygear) - and possibly the loose teeth have wedged the geartrain - getting in between other gears. I would opt for another gearbox, and then when swapped over - you can take your's apart to find out what's gone wrong. They are however rarely worth repairing - especially when something major has gone wrong.

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
Yep - I'd go for laygear damage from the description - I picked up a replacement (used) 1098 box for £10 so not gonna be expensive for you to fix. Look on ebay or post up here in the wanted section....

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
Sorry - I know it's not good news, but i suspect you knew that anyway. I can't however tie it all in with the clutch problems you seem to be having - maybe just unfortunate coincidence.

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
perhaps the shaft isn't spinning freely with the clucth plate as it should be, if a tooth has broken off the layshaft and is caught in the workings of the gearbox, could this cause the shaft not to release properly in neutral and therefore slow the engine resisting it from turning? this is just me speculating obviously but thats how it appears something is stopping it turning feely in neutral until i put the clutch down and it's free again and wont stall..

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
Indeed - the gearbox appears to be seized! But can't see how that caused the clutch operating pad to fall off the pressure plate!

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
This one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/morris-minor-1098 ... 1e5a81a310 claims to be fully rebuilt - but I would query what has been done. In particular - has it had a new second gear fitted - new laygear - new layshaft (and bearings) and new 1st gear ??? All these - along with new syncro cones and main shaft bearings - are what I would be looking for in a 'fully rebuilt' gearbox!

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
indeed at a good price for a rebuilt unit, i will contact the seller, thanks

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
Did the new gearbox fix the clutch problem? I have the same problem. I did a 1275 upgrade from my 948 and the clutch pressure plate doughnut has broken twice almost within 20 miles. I have installed the everything correctly. My trnassmission is a rebuilt with aboiut 20,000 miles on it. It worked fine on the 948. I am using tghe 1275 throwout bearing but perhaps the 948 inline woudl give me more play.
Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
The 948 plate just can't cope with the 1275 torque! You either need to upgrade to the Spridget flywheel/clutch complete - or a 1098 flywheel/clutch although the centre of the flywheel will need to be drilled to take the 6 bolts that hold a 1275 flywheel on.

Re: gearbox/clutch noise/gear problems
hi yes i bought a new gearbox and another clutch kit and havent had any problems since i guess there must have been play in the layshaft or something, but the on inspection the gearbox had many teeth in the drained oil, so that would have caused the clutch problems i would have thought.
