Banjo Bolts

Post by thecontainerdriver »

Evening all, here's a question for you. I'm working on the oil pipe that leads from the engine block to the oil filter. When I'm tightening the banjo bolt, do I need to align the holes in the bolt with the pipe to allow the oil to circulate? Or doesn't it matter, will the oil circulate anyway?

All the best.

There is a recess in the banjo on the end of the pipe to take the oil flow.I would fit the pipe loosely onto the filter housing, then fit pipe to the block, taking care not to cross the threads, then attach the filter housing to the block before tightening everything up. Make sure that the bottom spring and plate are in position below the filter element. It is not normally necessary to replace the O ring at the top of the bowl unless it leaks, just smear oil around the O ring and fill the filter bowl with oil before refitting.

The BIG RISK is when tightening the pipe to the filter - it's all too easy to twist the pipe, or even to snap it!

You could reduce this 'risk' by putting a few drops of oil between the pipe and nut.

It's usually oily enough - it's just a case of being aware and not over tightening it.
