Cilyinder head swap?

Post by williamraff »

Hi, can anyone tell me if a mini 1275 head is interchangeable with a 950cc A series engine and if so would there be any benefit or detriment to making this change?
Many thanks,Will.

Yes, its a good mod to make. Use 1275 head gasket and check that you have sufficient valve to block clearance. Most have enough although some may need the valves sinking a little into the head. Water pump will have to change also if it is a late mini head without the thermostat bypass.... Best used with a decent inlet manifold, Hif38 carb, 1098 cam and a free flowing exhaust system....

Thats great, many thanks for the response :D . I have also been looking at twin 1 1/4" su carbs with a Mini inlet manifold on ebay, would these provide any firther benefit than a single carb set up on the 1275 head?
Thanks again, Will.

Single Hif38 is the best option

Be aware you also need the 1275 rocker gear - or spend ages re-aligning the rockers on the existing shaft so they act directly over the exhaust valve tips. Don't underestimate the importance of checking the exhaust valve clearance...... You can't 9safely) just bolt it on! Twin 1.25" carbs are a waste of time - as above - single HIF38 (or HS4) on an MG Metro inlet is the way to go.

IF in good condition - it will go far beyond 6000 ! Crankshaft damper is a VERY good idea though!

Wow, will these mods really make that much difference? I was just looking to give the lump a bit more pep as I would like to use as a daily driver. I am not looking to strangle the life out of the poor thing :o I am assuming the is the easiest and most cost effective improvement as opposed to just swapping for a marina engine?
Thanks, Will.

It is the 'easiest' and most cost-effective upgrade. But won't give the lugging power of a 1275 of course.
