Torsion bars / Series II traveller wood etc..

Post by rayofleamington »

Are the torsion bars on a series II meant to be the same as / similar to the Minor 1000. I've seen one without the adjuster plate at the crossmember - it had a big adjusting srew in the end of the lever :o
This screwed down to a plate (approx 2" by 1") on the floor/crossmember and there was no cross hole for the bolt where it would normally go to the adjuster plate.
I don't recognise it - has anyone seen anything similar on another BMC car?

Also - does anyone know how similar the series II and Minor 1000 traveller wood is?

brixtonmorris,
Thanks once again. I'm sure they must have been original on something even though it's not a Minor, as it would be too much effort to make a new toorsion bar lever as a one off!
The rear suspension and axle was maybe MGB? It took Minor rims but had twin trailing arms and coils springs. I'll ask some 'MG' enthusiasts if they know anything about torsion bars.

very strange
espically no holes in crossmember
i imagine the spline part of the lever arm would be difficult to make.

The floor and sills and rear suspension mounts were home made so the lack of hole in crossmember was not a big surprise.
The arm was held to the crossmember by a bolt not too far from the torsion bar itself - wierd stuff.

Hello Ray,

many years ago I ran a Riley 1.5, and I'm almost certain that the torsion bars had a screw adjustment at the rear.

The Marinas out here had the screw adjustment at the rear. It can be adapted to fit the Minor.

In Ray Newells "Original Morris Minor", it mentions that the lower timber piece behind the door on early SIIs has a different profile. Other than that, it should just be the different rear light set up. SIIs would have just had the tail lights, later cars having indicators.
I'd check with an expert like Steve Foreman, just to be sure though.
Have you found yourself a Traveller, Ray?

I found a heap of scrap that used to be a series 2 Traveller (sorry Andrew if you read that). The poor thing had had a hard life and then had a complete floor/sills rebuild including fitting a coil sping / twin trailing arm axle set up at the rear and Marina disks at the front, running with a 1098 engine and box.
Unfortunately the only original bit of steel was the front roof which was dented anyway. Other bits that initially looked ok were bad as well, like the double skinned engine bay floor :-(. The scratch made sills had rotted and it would be a lot of work to cut out all the mess and start again with proper panels.
In fact it would have been less work to cut a series II saloon roof off and mate it to a late traveller

Hardly! It's not worth anything.......

Trouble is that I want it restored ideally, but I don't have the time to do it myself. Especially now that I have learnt that I might have to relocate to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne due to work..........

I don't really want to get rid as it's been rejected by it's owners twice before, but I have too many ill cars at the moment.

Yes, I can imagine the language barrier between Geordie and Pottery being quite immense!

Should not be too bad though as I like Auf Wiedersehen Pet!

Mind you, that's the trouble with Universities, everyone seems to have a home counties accent! (except me!).

Well, that's good to know!

My accent is more Pottery than Stokie though. But I dare say that some folk would say it's the same........
